Every property is different, but this is a realistic picture of how a modern fuse box replacement can work in a typical family home.

Picture a three-bedroom semi-detached house with an older fuse box in the hallway cupboard. The homeowner has recently added a new kitchen, is considering an EV charger, and has noticed that the lights and sockets are still protected by old-style fuses. Nothing has failed, but the board is dated, there is limited space for extra circuits, and there is no modern protection for the household circuits.

The first point to make is that an old consumer unit is not automatically dangerous simply because of its age. However, it may not offer the protection, capacity or clear circuit labelling expected from a modern installation. A replacement is normally considered when a board is damaged, has repeated tripping issues, uses rewireable fuses, has no RCD protection, or needs to accommodate work such as an electric shower, extension, kitchen alteration or EV charger.

In this example, the homeowner asks for a free quote. Before giving a firm price, the electrician checks the consumer unit, main earthing arrangement, bonding to services where required, visible cable condition, circuit types and available space. This matters because replacing the board means testing the circuits connected to it. It is not simply a case of taking one box off the wall and fitting another.

If a hidden fault appears during testing, such as damaged cable insulation or a circuit that does not meet the required test results, that issue needs dealt with separately. It is better to know this upfront than be surprised on the day.

What the New Consumer Unit Included

For this home, a metal consumer unit is fitted with individual RCBO protection for the main circuits and surge protection. An RCBO protects a single circuit against overloads and certain earth faults, so one fault is less likely to switch off power to the whole house. If a fault develops on the upstairs socket circuit, for example, the lighting and kitchen sockets should remain available.

Surge protection is worth discussing, particularly in homes with modern appliances, boilers, televisions, computers and smart controls. It is not a guarantee that electrical equipment can never be damaged, but it helps reduce the risk from certain voltage surges. The exact equipment specified should suit the property and the installation assessment, rather than being chosen as an unnecessary add-on.

The electrician also leaves spare capacity where practical. This can make a real difference later if the property needs an EV charger, garden power, external lighting, a new kitchen circuit or a loft conversion. A cramped consumer unit that is already full may solve today’s problem but create more expense when the next improvement comes along.

Some homes may need other protective devices depending on the circuit type, property and risk assessment. These are not automatically required for every job. The right approach is to assess the installation and explain the options clearly, rather than fitting equipment that the customer does not need.

Clear labelling is part of the job

Once the new board is installed, each circuit should be identified clearly. That sounds like a small detail, but it is useful when a lamp trips a circuit, a kitchen appliance develops a fault, or work is being carried out in the future. The homeowner should know which switch controls the upstairs lights, the cooker, the shower and the socket circuits without guessing.

The main switch and protective devices should also be accessible. If the consumer unit is hidden behind stored coats, boxes or furniture, it can slow things down in an emergency. The cupboard does not need to be empty, but the board should be reachable and the door should be able to open properly.

What Happens on Installation Day

A consumer unit upgrade usually involves a planned power shutdown. In a straightforward home, the work can often be completed in one day, but the timing depends on the number of circuits, the condition of the wiring and whether any remedial work is found. The electrician will isolate the supply safely, remove the old unit, fit the new consumer unit and then test every circuit before putting it back into service.

Homeowners can make the day easier by charging mobile phones beforehand, moving items away from the work area and planning around appliances that need power. Fridges and freezers should be kept closed as much as possible. If anyone in the home relies on electrically powered medical equipment, that should be raised before a date is agreed so a suitable plan can be made.

Testing is a key part of the job. It checks that the circuits are connected correctly, protective devices operate as intended and the installation is safe to return to use. This is why a consumer unit change can sometimes take longer than expected. A circuit that worked well enough with an old fuse box may show a problem once proper tests are carried out.

On completion, the homeowner receives the relevant electrical certification for the work. Keep this with other property paperwork. It can be helpful for future electrical alterations, landlord records, insurance queries and when selling the house.

What Can Affect the Price?

The size of the consumer unit is only one part of the cost. The number of circuits, type of protection required, condition of the existing wiring, earthing and bonding work, access, and any faults found during testing can all affect the final figure.

For example, this typical home may need a straightforward replacement plus an earth bonding upgrade. Another property might need several circuits repaired, a new shower circuit, a damaged meter tail replaced, or a separate supply arranged for an outbuilding. These are different jobs, even if both customers initially ask for a fuse box upgrade.

That is why an estimate based only on a photograph can be useful as a starting point, but an inspection gives a more reliable answer. A clear quote should set out what is included and explain what would be treated as additional work if testing reveals an issue.

When a New Consumer Unit Is Not the Only Answer

A new board will not cure every electrical problem. If sockets trip repeatedly because of a faulty appliance, damaged outdoor cable or moisture getting into an external light fitting, the cause still needs found and repaired. Equally, replacing a dated consumer unit does not turn old wiring into new wiring.

Sometimes the best option is a smaller repair or an Electrical Installation Condition Report first, particularly if there are concerns about the condition of the wiring. For landlords, this can be a sensible way to understand what needs done for the property and prioritise any safety work before tenants move in.
